Mission
The Planning Board supports Bernardston’s steady growth and development by focusing on economic sustainability, preserving the Town’s unique rural character and abundant natural resources. It creates and implements Bernardston’s Master Plan, administers the Zoning Bylaws, and reviews and approves subdivision plans, site plan review applications, and special permits.
Purpose
The Planning Board guides and regulates land use in Bernardston through thoughtful planning and adherence to Zoning Bylaws and state regulations. The Board seeks community input, promotes sustainable development, protects open space, and ensures that the Town’s growth aligns with its long-term vision. The Board invites public engagement and citizen collaboration through participation in public meetings and hearings to build a thriving community.
Roles and Responsibilities
1. Review and rule on zoning applications presented to it with respect to their adherence to the Town’s zoning by-laws as currently written.
2. Update as needed the Town’s zoning bylaws:
a. In accordance with the changing mandates of MA state law
b. As deemed appropriate by the town citizenry.
3. Draft legislation:
a. As required by MA state mandates
b. Which best serves Bernardston's long-term needs.
c. Such legislation will:
i. Maximize the town’s ability to respond to environmental, economic, and social challenges;
ii. Develop new programs that help fulfill the objectives expressed in the Town’s Master Plan, which include but are not limited to:
1) Preservation of Bernardston’s historically rural character;
2) Preservation of its inherent ecosystem services;
3) Encouraging appropriate economic development within guidelines of #’s 1 & 2, above.
4. Advising the Town Selectboard and other committees, boards, and commissions on matters affecting community development.
